Forty-one years after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, award-winning journalist Max McCoy traveled to Japan to interview and photograph the survivors. "Zero Minutes to Midnight" is the result, a nonfiction narrative in eight parts which gives voice to those who witnessed nuclear apocalypse.

In Japanese, the survivors are called hibakusha -- literally, "those who received the bomb." Featured is the story of Yoshito Matsushige, the newspaper photographer who shot the only images of Hiroshima the day the bomb fell. A special section includes some of those historic photos, as well as black-and-white portraits of the survivors made by McCoy in 1986.

In a new introduction, the author recalls the effect of that trip on his own life, and in the afterword--written in the wake of Japan's March 2011 earthquake and nuclear meltdown--he reminds us that apocalypse is always only a minute away. At about 65 print pages, "Zero Minutes to Midnight" is long enough to present a compelling and historic portrait of the hibakusha, but short enough to read in a single sitting.

bombings through the eyes of the survivors. What I did not realize, but what becomes clear through Mr. McCoy's writing, is that the surviving Japanese are looked down upon, by both themselves and society. They seem to be ashamed of having survived the ordeal, when so many others did not. They are also ashamed of what the effects of radiation have done to them, leaving permanent scarring physically, emotionally, and mentally. These people were reluctent to share their stories, and it shows in their short, concise tales of their plights. Because of this, their stories take on new meaning, and convey the horror and helplessness that they went through. The book is not long, but the words are lingering, and put you in the scene to wonder what you might do in a similar situation.

Zero Minutes to Midnight edition by Max McCoy Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

Very interesting, but heartbreaking.
Great information, well ordered. Reviewed many of the events I was already familiar with, plus more. Recommended.
In 1986, 27-year-old journalist Max McCoy traveled to Japan to interview survivors of the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He produced eight feature-length articles (maybe "vignettes" or "sketches" would be a better description) and some striking photographs. This book is a collection of those eight pieces, as well as a sampling of his photos.

McCoy was obviously moved by the experience, but his writing was restrained and objective throughout. Only the Introduction and Epilogue, both written in 2011, give away his inclinations though not a pacifist, he is appalled by nuclear war and its effects. This is excellent journalism, tightly written, hitting all the right emotional chords without a hint of mawkishness--a remarkable performance by a young journalist who was then unknown nationally.

Highly recommended.
This is a wonderful short book based on interviews with survivors of the brutal and unnecessary atomic bomb blasts on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended World War II. I wish the story could have been longer and more detailed. It is definitely worth reading, and makes me want to search out more material about survivors of that madness.
I read *Zero Minutes to Midnight* during the course of an afternoon and evening. It is a thoughtful telling of the survivors of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan interviewed 40 years after the war ended.

McCoy is not a sentimentalist. His writing is sparse and vivid. You are there; you listen as McCoy extracts from those literally scarred by an atomic bomb their horrors and nightmares. You learn how normal they were -- we all are -- and how in seconds their world ended.

That the words you're reading were written by such a youthful journalist is astonishing. McCoy was already showing his talent and this is a story that should be mandatory reading in every American high school history class.
